Architects Are Burning Out, But Not for the Reason They Think

Architects have a serious burnout problem. Yet most of them don't really know what’s causing it, nor what they can do about it.
According to a 2026 survey by MyArchitectAI, 73% of architecture professionals have experienced burnout, and half of them have seriously considered quitting their job. When asked what caused it, 47% pointed to long hours and poor work-life balance, whereas only 11% identified administrative burden.
The extra hours are clearly weighing them down, but architects rarely stop to ask what’s filling up their schedule. Based on 500 interviews we have done in the past 3 years, when they're mid-project and need a detail from three years ago, it takes a long time to search for it. Or when they know the last version of a drawing will be hard to find, they’ll end up just rebuilding it instead.
Every day, administrative overhead is quietly accumulating for architects, adding more manual tasks to their demanding workloads.
Research on AEC workflows shows that mid-career professionals, at the 4-to-14-year mark, bear the heaviest load.
Once architects move from execution to ownership, their time costs more and the stakes get higher. They're now responsible for managing clients, leading teams, and signing off on documentation where errors have real consequences. And when junior staff can't find key information on their own, their questions inevitably land on the senior architect's desk, who’s already stretched too thin.
Architects don’t have the time to mentor, design, and serve as the firm's living filing system
Across the firm, mentorship and design work eventually lose out to operational priorities. And this is where burnout happens: when architects can’t do the work they actually want to do, because they’re overwhelmed with too many administrative tasks.
AI won’t fix this burnout overnight. But it can help reduce the effort required to coordinate and organize the firm’s knowledge, lightening the load on senior staff.
ARKI is an AI tool built to ease the pressure on architects, making sure that their expertise doesn't get buried under the administrative weight of running a firm.
